Dark Green Exterior Siding
Since before we began construction, I knew I wanted the house to be dark. Originally, I had my heart set on black. You can read about that here and here. Long story short, we changed our minds last minute and decided to go with a deep dark GREEN! Ah, the single best design decision of the whole project, if you ask me! I appreciate our dark green siding every single time I drive up to our house.
I had a difficult time finding inspiration photos of other dark green houses, making it feel additionally risky. At times, it was challenging to envision what it would look like once installed. But let me tell you, we are so happy with the color! We really wanted the nature surrounding the house to be the focal point, almost as if the house sat back and blended in. Dark green was the perfect choice considering the foliage surrounding the property. We searched high and low for a wooded lot near the lakeshore, and when excavating the land, we were careful to keep as many trees as possible as we wanted to feel "nestled in the woods."
As you read here, we were thrilled to work with the amazing Quality Edge. It was fate when they suggested their color, "Spruce." They hadn't known that I had originally selected a black exterior only to find myself flirting with the idea of dark green instead. When our sample arrived in the mail, we immediately jumped in the car and drove out to the lakeshore to hold it up against the house. After approximately 30 seconds of Ty holding up the sample against the Tyvek, I said, "Yep, that's definitely it!"
Their color, Spruce, is the perfect dark green. It's warm without being too muddy and clean without leaning too cold. It's dark and dramatic and but light enough to be obviously green and not black.
Our siding is from the TruCedar collection which is steel made to look like wood! It is brilliant. The steel siding is variegated to look and feel like wood grain, yet does not requite the maintenance of wood! Located near the Michigan lakeshore, this house is going to be exposed to the elements from sun, to rain, to lake effect snow. We love that we will never have to paint, stain, or re-side the house!
TruCedar siding comes in solid colors (I love the black), a wood grain visual (what we have), and even a cedar shake visual (dying to use this color in a future project).
We selected the 10" board and batten. I LOVE a board and batten exterior. Because we went with a narrower board and batten on the Holland Cottage, we decided to change things up by going with a wider 10" on this house. The steel siding is also available in a variety of other sizes.
I get a lot of questions asking for a paint color. I held up my paint deck against the house and found SW Rock Bottom to be a close match! I think we will incorporate that paint colors inside the house somewhere, possibly the powder bath!
We went with black windows (black on the outside and white on the inside) and a black front door to blend in and not distract from the beautiful siding. I love the copper accents inside the garage sconces.
Now, we just need some landscaping to make the exterior feel complete! Unfortunately, we won't be able to plant grass or shrubs until Spring! I'm thinking white hydrangeas, lilacs, some more evergreens around the perimeter of the lot, a firepit area, string lights, and some black Adirondacks (I already bought these!) In the meantime, I'm hoping to keep a fresh blanket of snow to cover up our dirt yard!
The dark green was beautiful blending in with the summer greenery, dramatic in the fall against the vibrant foliage, and in my opinion, most stunning surrounded by crisp snow.
I can't recommend this steel siding enough!
