Florida House Design Theme
Our first blog post about the Florida house design....yay! I have been bottling up all of these design concepts for months too long! I am eager to share! It has been 4 years since we went under contract on the first build which fell through and 3 years since we bought this lot! Considering, the design theme, along with my own personal design, has slowly evolved!
Obviously, this is a beach house, so the design theme will be, in short, beachy! In many ways, we want it to feel like a quintessential beach house...driftwood, white walls, neutral colors. Yet, my personal style has grown to be more traditional. In our Michigan build, you'll find dark colors, rich wood tones, vintage oil paintings, and antique pottery....not exactly "light and beachy." Thus, my goal here is to find the perfect marriage between these two styles!
To maximize feelings of beach living, we will be installing with a light oak floor, white tongue and groove paneling, and some beadboard ceilings. Fun blue tile will be installed in one of the bathrooms. You'll find a swinging daybed on the second porch and a wicker accents inside the house. I'm shopping for linen pillows and seagrass baskets. To bring in some traditional elements, I've selected handmade zellige tile for the primary bathroom and kitchen backsplash. Over the past year, I have been collecting antiques that will bring age and character, yet follow a coastal neutral color scheme. I suppose the ever growing "coastal grandmother" concept may be apparent in this house.
The home itself is very Southern with two story porches (my favorite) and a traditional "Florida cottage" feel.
Below, you'll find some images that I have pinned for the home! I've selected that exact star cross cement tile for one of the bathrooms! Click images for sources.
These soothing color schemes get me so excited to see this house come together! Light, calm, organic, serene...these are words that we want our guests to think of when they walk in the door! Like the Michigan build, we want to add some character to the home to make it feel a little less new and little more "lived in." Imperfect handmade tile, marble accents, and some antique furniture should help this cause!
Below, I'm sharing links to a few items we have selected for the house already! I picked out theseagrass dining pendant over a year ago and I a dying to see it in person! This bowl looks very similar to one that I find at an antique market! This modular sectional will be inviting on the front porch. I'm trying my best not to shop too much until the house is nearly complete as we won't be driving down a uhaul this time (like we did when we furnished the cabin). We will be spending some time staying in the Florida house to put it together...I will be doing most of the shopping then!
Stick around to see it all come together!
